Seaworld (USA)

Virtual Reality Wifi Network

SeaWorld is a theme park and marine zoological park, in Orlando, Florida, USA. In 2017 it hosted an estimated 3,962,000 guests, ranking it the 11th most visited amusement park in the United States.

Kraken Unleashed (named for the fictional sea monster of the same name) is a steel floorless roller coaster located at SeaWorld Orlando. Manufactured by Bolliger & Mabillard, the ride features a total of seven inversions including two vertical loops, a dive loop and a cobra roll. Kraken opened on June 1, 2000 and is the world's second longest floorless coaster elongating up to 4,177 feet (1,273 m).

In 2017 the coaster was refurbished and renamed to Kraken Unleashed following the inclusion of a Virtual Reality experience.

Spindlewood’s Deployment

High Definition Computer Generated Imagery (CGI) was used to recreate an underwater world for the virtual reality experience, which was synchronised with the flips & turns of the rollercoaster.

To ensure the CGI was correctly synchronised with the ride and to allow ride operators to receive ride telemetry and pass messages to the rollercoaster’s riders a reliable means of communication was required.

Spindlewood were contracted to design and install a Wifi network which was fast and reliable, allowing the VR engines (contained within each rollercoaster train) to communicate with ride control & other parts of the track.

Unlike the majority of other Wifi applications this required the network to have exceedingly fast roaming features to allow seamless and immediate handoff of each VR device as it passed by each Wifi access point, as the train travelled at high speed.
